Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital Achieves Milestone with First Kidney Transplant

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto has successfully performed its first kidney transplant at the TETFund Centre of Excellence in Urology and Nephrology.

During the unveiling ceremony, Salisu Bakari, Director of Research and Development at TETFund, commended UDUTH for being the top-performing center among 27 TETFund facilities nationwide.

Bakari reaffirmed TETFund’s commitment to supporting the hospital’s sustainability and enhancing its status as a leading medical center in Sub-Saharan Africa. He announced plans to invite directors from other centers to learn from UDUTH’s success and emphasized improvements in ICT infrastructure across Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bashir Garba praised the medical team for their achievement and expressed intentions to sustain the kidney transplant program. He urged state governments to assist in developing a dedicated facility for transplant patients.

Prof. Anas Sabir, Chief Medical Director of UDUTH, recognized the dedication of the hospital staff and highlighted ongoing investments in workforce capacity building. Governors of Sokoto and Kebbi States pledged their support for the center, with Kebbi’s Health Commissioner expressing pride in the transplant’s potential to reduce medical tourism.

Sokoto’s Health Commissioner reiterated the state’s commitment to healthcare sustainability, citing significant budget allocations for health in 2025. Governor Ahmed Aliyu announced a cash donation of N10 million to support the center.

In a goodwill message, the Sultan of Sokoto commended the hospital’s management for their achievement and assured support for its continued growth.
