UCH Doctors Begin Strike Over Power Outage

Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have commenced an indefinite strike due to continued power outages in some of the hospital’s residential quarters.

Confirming the development on Monday, the General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at UCH, Dr. Uthman Adedeji, stated that the decision followed an emergency general meeting to assess the situation.

Although the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) restored power to UCH last Wednesday after more than 100 days of blackout, Adedeji noted that only some sections of the doctors’ residential quarters were reconnected, leaving others without electricity.

“In light of the prevailing circumstances, we are left with no choice but to embark on the earlier planned total and indefinite strike until all residential quarters are fully reconnected,” he said.

He acknowledged efforts by the UCH management to address the issue but emphasized the need for a comprehensive solution to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

The association had previously warned that its members would down tools if electricity was not fully restored by 4 p.m. on Monday.

Adedeji assured that the association would continue to review the situation and advocate for the welfare of its members.
