Tragic Stampede Claims 17 Lives During Christmas Rice Distribution in Anambra

At least 17 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured in a stampede that occurred during a Christmas rice distribution event organized by the Obijackson Foundation in Okija, Anambra State.

The incident took place at the foundation’s facility in Amarata, Ohalegbu village, where attendees had gathered as early as 5 AM, eagerly awaiting the distribution.

Eyewitnesses reported that chaos ensued when the distribution began, leading to the stampede. Victims, primarily women and youths, were rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, where disturbing scenes emerged of bodies, including those of pregnant women, outside the mortuary.

The police have yet to confirm the incident, while relatives of the victims mourned their losses at the hospital.
