The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resign or face impeachment over what he described as poor governance and disregard for the law.
Okocha made the statement on Monday while addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, reacting to Fubara’s invitation of 27 lawmakers to a meeting following the Supreme Court’s judgment, which validated them as the authentic members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Describing the invitation as a “Greek gift,” Okocha questioned whether the governor had softened his stance after months of political standoff. He also criticized the decision to have the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, sign the invitation letter instead of the governor himself, calling it an “aberration.”
Okocha stated that the APC, as the major opposition party in Rivers State, had resolved to take a firm position against Fubara, whom he labeled “clueless.”
He accused the governor of flouting the law and disrespecting President Bola Tinubu, who had earlier intervened in the state’s political crisis with an eight-point agenda, most of which Fubara allegedly failed to implement.
“When we said Siminalayi Fubara was clueless, we were not joking. The evidence is clear. The governor behaves like a saint, but he is a dangerous snake,” Okocha said.
The APC chairman insisted that Fubara’s options were limited.
“He should either resign or be impeached because he has run the state aground and disrespected Mr. President.”
“The Supreme Court judgment is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the Governor now is for him to resign or be impeached. And he should be honourable about it.
“If he refuses to resign, he will be impeached. I don’t need to be a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly to know the numerous impeachable offences he has committed. There is no government in Rivers State.”
Okocha also warned that Fubara’s continued stay in office could lead to political instability saying: “The state is already sitting on a keg of gunpowder, and with a little spark, it will explode. So, let him honourably resign.”
