Ogun Govt Shuts Down School, Suspends Teacher Over Student’s Death

The Ogun State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-Emi, following the tragic death of one SS2 student, Monday Arijo.

The government’s decision comes after the arrest and suspension of a teacher suspected of inflicting corporal punishment on the deceased student. The incident, which occurred last Friday, led to the student’s untimely demise.

In addition, the school’s principal, Mrs. Tamrat Onaolapo, has been suspended for allowing corporal punishment to be administered, a practice explicitly prohibited by state regulations.

The state government’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Lekan Adeniran, confirmed these developments in a statement released on Tuesday.

The statement partly read, “The closure of the school was based on the directive of the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, who has also directed that a panel should be set up to investigate the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.

“The governor has promised that those liable by the outcome of the investigation will be made to face the full wrath of the law”.

Meanwhile, representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology have visited the family of the late student to offer condolences and express their deep sorrow over the tragic loss. The ministry aims to gather firsthand accounts of the incident to facilitate a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Also, high-powered delegation from the Ogun State Government visited the family of the late student to offer condolences and assure them of a thorough investigation into the tragic incident.

The delegation, which included key education officials and representatives from labor unions, expressed their deepest sympathies to the family. They pledged the state government’s support during this difficult time and reiterated their commitment to student safety.

The officials emphasized that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the student’s death and to hold those responsible accountable. They assured the family that justice would be served.

The DPO of Idi-Emi also visited the family and assured them of a thorough investigation and the safety of their children at the school.

As a token of sympathy, the government presented the family with a condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000.
