The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has claimed that they reached an agreement with President Bola Tinubu for Kanu’s release.
Kanunta Kanu, Nnamdi’s brother, revealed that during the lead-up to the 2023 presidential elections, he met with Tinubu’s son, Seyi, and that the agreement was made with the President’s approval.
Kanunta explained that during their meeting in Abuja, Seyi assured him that the President had sanctioned their discussion, and any agreement reached would be binding on Tinubu.
The main topic of their conversation was the release of Nnamdi Kanu. As part of the deal, the IPOB agreed not to boycott the elections, trusting that Tinubu would honor his promise to free Kanu if he won.
Kanunta recounted how Tinubu reiterated his commitment to facilitating Kanu’s release during his campaign visit to Owerri.
Despite these assurances, Kanunta expressed frustration that, nearly two years after Tinubu’s election, Kanu remains in detention without charges. He also noted that the case has been stalled for over three months since Justice Binta Nyako recused herself from the trial, with no new judge assigned.
