Nigerian Doctor Warns of Healthcare Crisis Amid US Funding Pause

Dr. Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, has expressed alarm over Nigeria’s healthcare system following reports of a pause in U.S. funding for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

In a post on X, he emphasized that Nigeria cannot rely on donations for healthcare, warning that the funding cut could lead to increased infections of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria.

“Now is the time to take our health system seriously. The second-best time was yesterday. Nigeria cannot continue to depend on donations for its own healthcare,” Egemba stated.

Egemba highlighted the critical need for antiretroviral drugs, which are primarily donated, stressing that without them, many will develop AIDS.

“If Nigeria doesn’t rise to the occasion and take charge, infections will rise—currently close to 200,000 new infections every year. People will die from AIDS because drugs are not available,” he warned.

He urged immediate action to address this looming health crisis.
