Nigerian Institute of Civil Engineers holds peacewalk against building collapse in Ekiti (PHOTOS)

…sensitizes residents on the dangers of awarding building contracts to quacks.

The Nigerian Institute of Civil Engineers on Saturday held a peacewalk against Building infrastructure collapse in Ekiti state.

Converging at the Obafemi Awolo Civic Engineering center in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, the chairman, NICE, Ekiti state chapter, Engr Samuel Oluwafemi Ogundare said the purpose of the walk was to create awareness to the people of Ekiti about building and infrastructure collapse in the state.

“The reason for this walk is to create awareness for the people of Ekiti state about building collapse and the need to patronize professionals that have the competence to do the job so we can ensure lives and property in the state and avoid building collapsing in the state.”

According to him, poor construction practices, Substandard materials, lack of public awareness and corruption are responsible for the numbers of building collapse witnessed not just in the state, but also in some parts of the country.

He adviced the Ekiti state government to tackle the areas of corruption when presenting contracts to some engineers to avoid structures being built with substandard materials.

Receiving their submission on behalf of the state governor, The Technical Adviser  to the Governor on Road Infrastructure Mr Temitope Azeez said Oyebanji’s support towards ensuring safer building erections remains undeterred.

“We have a listening Governor, he has made it known severally that he is with them towards ensuring less cases of building collapse in the state”.

He also promised to be fully involved in the roadwalk.

“I am also a fellow in the Nigerian Institute of Civil Engineers so I’ll join them in sensitizing the people of Ekiti state on the issue of building collapse”.

After their submission was received by the Technical Adviser to the Gov on road infrastructure, Mr temitope Azeez, they storm the streets of Ado in their numbers, as they sensitize the people of Ekiti state on the dangers of building collapses of building, encouraging them to patronize competent hands.
