NANS Demands Probe Into NYSC Over Non-Payment of N77,000 Allowance

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to investigate the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over its failure to implement the newly approved N77,000 monthly allowance for corps members.

Despite the Federal Government’s approval of the increase from N33,000 to N77,000 effective July 2024, NANS expressed disappointment that the NYSC has yet to commence payment.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, attributed the delay to the non-release of funds. However, NANS National Vice President, Inter-Campus Affairs, Felicia Akinbodunse, insisted that the delay was unjustified, especially as corps members only received N33,000 for February instead of the N70,000 earlier promised.

She noted that both the Federal Government and several state governments have already implemented the new minimum wage, making NYSC’s failure to comply unacceptable.

Akinbodunse urged the Federal Government to investigate the delay, warning that withholding the allowance could affect corps members’ morale. She also assured that NANS would engage with the NYSC to clarify the situation, especially since NYSC staff have already started receiving the increased wages.
