The Deputy Inspector General of Police (D.I.G) Abiodun Sylvest Alabi, emphasized the pivotal role of the media in maintaining national peace and security hence urging Journalists to avoid the spread fake news.
In an annual Lecture organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalist, Ekiti State Council, themed: “The Role of Media in Promoting National Peace and Security “ as part of the 2024 Press Week Celebrations on Saturday, DIG Alabi highlights the role of the media in maintaining national security by being the watchdog for citizens.
“In crisis, conflict or potential security threats, it is through the media that the public becomes aware of the situation”.
“The information helps citizens to take precautions avoid conflicts and contribute to national security by staying informed.” Alabi stated.
In his address, Alabi cautioned that the media can have both positive and negative influences on society.
“Media in its positive way can encourage national unity, expose injustices, support education and awareness.”
“It can also fuel ethnic and religious tensions, spread of misinformation and reinforcing social inequalities.”
In his concluding remarks, The DIG outlined the immense potential of the media to contribute to a more peaceful and secure nation.
“To improve media, there should be responsible reporting, avoid reporting activities of bandits and giving them unnecessary promotion.”
Oba Adegbenro Falore, the Olufaki of Ifaki-Ekiti, in his remark called on journalists to prioritize factual reporting and avoid spreading negative information.
The lecture was attended by several prominent figures, including The Zone B National Vice President of the Union Comrade Ronke Samo, The Commissioner of Police Mr. Adeniran Akinwale, The Comptroller of Immigration Service Mr. Joseph Olutayo Dada, The Nigerian Association of Women Journalist among others.
