The Garun Mallam Local Government Area in Kano State has indefinitely closed the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market due to allegations of prostitution, adultery, and homosexuality occurring on the premises.
Council Chairman Aminu Kadawa issued a seven-day ultimatum for all occupants to vacate or face legal action.
He emphasized the need to restore order, stating the market had become a hub for criminal activities.
He stated, “Looking at how the market has become a centre for prostitution and other immoral activities contrary to the purpose of the market, it has to be closed indefinitely to restore sanity.”
Also, the Commissioner of Tourism and Management in Kano State, Aisha Saji supported the closure, recalling her previous experience as Commissioner for Women Affairs, where she led a raid at the same location that resulted in the arrest of 43 individuals, including 34 females and nine males aged 15 to 18, for prostitution and illegal alcohol sales.
Saji noted that 14 of those arrested were HIV-positive, with some unaware of their status.
She emphasized the need for development in the area through the establishment of a skills acquisition center to combat unemployment.
“This closure should not just mark the end of immoral activities but also serve as a stepping stone for development.
“Establishing a skills development institution in this area will not only curb unemployment but also equip our youths with sustainable means of livelihood,” Saji emphasised.
