Insecurity: Afe Babalola Calls For Law Amendment, Urges Military, Police To Obey Constitutional Duties

The founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola has advocated for law amendment in order for military and Police to maintain the territorial integrity of the country in addressing insecurity.

The legal icon made this call on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti during the 4th Aare Afe Babalola Distinguished Personality Lecture Series (DPLS) titled “Insecurity, Leadership and Peace Building in Nigeria: Dynamics and Challenges”.

The Lecture series, which is an annual gathering to celebrate Babalola’s unwavering commitment to nation-building, had in attendance the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Akinwale Adeniran, the Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Femi Ajakaye, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner, Omoseinde Olubunmi, Government Officials, Civil Defende Corps officials, among others.

Speaking with journalists, the legal icon solicited for constitutional changes and urged Nigerians to be united in ensuring order, orderliness and discipline in the country.

His words, “The constitutional responsibility of the military is to ensure and maintain the territorial integrity of a state, while that of the police is to ensure obedience to law and order.

“If we want the country to move forward, our law should be amended in such a way to saddle the military with the enforcement and obedience to law and order in this country.

“We must all unite to endure order, orderliness and discipline in our society”.

In his lecture, the commandant of Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Major General John Ochai solicited for strengthened police capacity, promotion of inclusive governance, support community-led initiatives, leverage international support, in order to combat insecurity.

He also highlighted community engagement, Leadership and peace building, Inclusive governance, among others, as some of the major strategies to fight insurgency.

The Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Smaranda Olarinde said the annual lecture series stand as a testament to their commitment to fostering intellectual discourse to address the security challenges in the country.

The lecture, according to her, is necessary for the aspirations of a secured and prosperous Nigeria.

Another highlight of the event was the presentation of institutional 2-star general plaque to Afe Babalola by the Commandant of NDA, for his contributions to nation building.
