High Court Strikes Out Defamation Suit Against Farotimi

The Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday struck out the criminal defamation suit leveled against human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi by the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola.

The decision of the court followed a notice of discontinuance filed to the court by the police prosecutor, Samson Osobu.

Recalled that Gmartnews reported that Aare Afe Babalola had earlier pardoned Farotimi on Sunday evening, after the intervention of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and other prominent Yoruba Monarchs

The Police Prosecutor filed the notice of discontinuance dated 29th January, 2025 to withdraw the defamation suit against the Lagos-based human rights activist.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the court ruling, the lawyer of the defendant, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, said Dele Farotimi agreed to the notice of discontinuance, adding that they are waiting for other cases in other courts.

According to him, there are other cases at Ekiti State Magistrate Court, Oyo, Ogun, Rivers States and Abuja.

Farotimi, who refused to speak with the press, was spotted in the court room around 9am,

Justice Babs Kuewunmi thereby struck out the suit.
