ECOWAS Makes Final Efforts to Engage Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso Before Withdrawal

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is making a last-ditch effort to engage with Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso as these countries prepare to formalize their withdrawal from the bloc on January 29, 2025.

Joel Ahofodji, Head of Communication at the ECOWAS Commission, confirmed that letters requesting meetings with the junta-led governments have been sent. Despite this outreach, no communication from the withdrawing nations has indicated a willingness to reconsider their decisions.

The bloc is set to approve the exit following a one-year notice period mandated by its treaty, while mediation efforts continue during a transitional phase
