Barely four days after a fuel tanker explosion killed over 98 people and injured 69 at Diko junction in Gurara local government area of Niger, residents of Bida, Bida local government area of the state on Tuesday morning invaded a fallen tanker to scoop oil.
In a viral video posted on social media by a resident of the area shows the chaotic scene where dozens of residents were scrambling to collect the spilt groundnut oil using all kinds of containers, including jerry cans and buckets.
Gmartnews reports that while some managed to scoop, others fled in different directions, apparently to prevent being caught up in an unfortunate situation.
Attempts to disperse the crowd by some concerned individuals fell on deaf ears as they scrambled for the contents of the fallen tanker.
Also, there were no official reactions to the latest incident from the state government.
However, a source from the community confirmed, “The tanker was carrying groundnut oil and not fuel as people earlier claimed in the viral video.
“Maybe people first mistook it for fuel because the place it happened is close to a filling station.”
