Chelsea and Earl’s Court are “in talks” about leaving Stamford Bridge for a new stadium.
Gmartnews gathered that the club has discussed the prospect of building a new stadium with Transport for London (TfL), a significant partner in charge of the Earls Court site.
Plans for a football stadium are not included in the mixed-use development presentation that the Earl’s Court Development Committee (ECDC) is expected to unveil next week. For more than a century, the London team has played at Stamford Bridge. With a little over 40,000 capacity, it is not as good as elite teams, ranking ninth in the Premier League. Efforts to enlarge the current site have thus far proven fruitless.
Chelsea’s CEO, Jason Gannon, has discussed a potential £500 million site with TfL and Delancey, a partner overseeing the site.Sources say the site could be worth up to £500 million.
However, any relocation from the current location would necessitate an agreement with Chelsea Pitch Owners, who own the freehold to Stamford Bridge, as well as consideration of supporters’ views. There is a possibility that the project’s progress could be delayed going by the rumors of internal strife between Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, the co-owners.
