Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has sparked debate by suggesting that Nigeria should adopt China’s leadership selection model. This model prioritizes merit-based selection over traditional elections.
Governor Zulum made the proposal at the 24th National Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Agricultural Engineers in Abuja, according to a statement released on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Ahmed Bundi.
He believes that Nigeria could benefit from this system, which emphasizes competence and experience.
“In China, they do selection versus election. They first identify credible leaders with proven integrity based on their past records. They evaluate the performance of those who have held public office, then select the best, and afterward, they subject the chosen candidates to an election.”
Zulum further emphasized the importance of both strong leadership and responsible citizenship in Nigeria. He stressed that effective governance requires a partnership between leaders and the people.
“Our problem here in Nigeria is not just about leadership but also followership. We must focus on both components rather than one. As much as we need good leaders, we also need citizens who can distinguish between right and wrong,” Zulum stated.
Governor Zulum highlighted the potential of technology to revolutionize Nigeria’s agriculture sector and contribute to food security.
Speaking on the role of innovation, Zulum noted, “This conference provides a unique opportunity to share knowledge, foster collaboration, and explore how emerging technologies can revolutionize agriculture.”
