The magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti has denied bail to human rights activist Dele Farotimi, who is facing charges of defamation against Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), the founder of Afe Babalola University.
The ruling was delivered during a resumed hearing on Tuesday, where presiding magistrate Abayomi Adeosun adjourned the bail application to December 20 after the police counsel, Samson Osobu, argued that the application was incompetent and irregular.
Farotimi was arraigned following allegations stemming from his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, which reportedly contains defamatory statements about Babalola.
The court’s decision comes after Farotimi was remanded in custody on December 4, 2024. Further details on the case are expected as proceedings continue.
