The Kebbi State Government has set up a special panel to investigate the controversial death of two children at the General Hospital in Zuru, amid allegations of a wrongly administered injection.
Governor Nasir Idris approved the probe following public outrage over the incident, which reportedly occurred earlier this week and has raised concerns about patient safety at the facility.
In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Yakubu Tafida, the committee is tasked with conducting a thorough and impartial investigation to determine both the immediate and remote causes of the deaths.
The panel is chaired by the Commissioner for Information, Yakubu Ahmed, with the Commissioners for Health, Sama’ila Augie, and Establishment, Manu Dogondaji, as members. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Zaki Abubakar Zaki, will serve as secretary.
The government said the panel will also verify claims that the children, reportedly siblings, died after receiving an injection, identify any individuals linked to the incident, and recommend sanctions where necessary.
Authorities stressed that negligence within the healthcare system would not be tolerated, assuring that anyone found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary or legal action.
The committee has been given one week to submit its report.
The incident has triggered anger in Zuru and surrounding communities, where residents have demanded accountability and improved medical standards at the hospital, a key referral centre in southern Kebbi.
