Fake Doctor Sentenced to Death for Botched Surgery in Ekiti

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced a self-acclaimed medical practitioner, Olatide Temitope Emmanuel, to death by hanging for murder and impersonation.

The 48-year-old was arraigned before Justice Jubril Aladejana on December 11, 2025, over the death of Bosede Falade, who reportedly died during childbirth after undergoing a surgery carried out by the defendant.

According to the charge, Emmanuel falsely presented himself as a medical doctor on June 9, 2019, at Ajebamidele Street, Otun-Ekiti, and later carried out a medical procedure on Falade on June 24, 2019, at Odo-Ikole compound, Erinmope-Ekiti, which resulted in her death.

A witness, Rev. Omotade, told the court that he was informed by the deceased’s husband that Falade had died during childbirth. On arriving at the facility, he observed the body on a stretcher and suspected the operation had been carried out unprofessionally before reporting the case to the police.

During his defence, Emmanuel claimed he had worked as a nursing apprentice in Lagos and later opened a clinic in Erinmope-Ekiti in 2019. He said the deceased came to him for delivery and agreed to a caesarean section, adding that the baby survived but the mother later developed complications and died.

The prosecution, led by Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, called seven witnesses and tendered the defendant’s statements, medical reports and photographs as exhibits.

In his judgement, Justice Aladejana held that the defendant admitted under cross-examination that he was not a qualified medical practitioner but still performed surgery.

The judge described the action as “wickedly reckless,” ruling that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Emmanuel’s actions caused the death of Bosede Falade.

He subsequently convicted Emmanuel on both counts and sentenced him to death by hanging.
