The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised an alert over a tampered batch of SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula (900g) discovered in circulation in Kaduna State.
In Public Alert No. 06/2026 issued on Sunday, the agency said the affected product — batch number 22939510A1206 — carried a falsified expiry date of January 20, 2027, instead of its original January 20, 2025 manufacturing timeline. The product bears NAFDAC registration number B1-2783, assigned to genuine SMA Gold 1 produced for the Nigerian market by Nestlé.
NAFDAC said the case came to light after the formula allegedly caused gastrointestinal distress in a four-month-old infant.
According to the agency, physical examination revealed clear signs of date revalidation, with inconsistencies between the preprinted sticker and the original markings beneath it.

It warned that altering shelf-life information without regulatory approval compromises safety, noting that expired infant formula may suffer nutrient degradation or microbial contamination — posing serious health risks to babies.
NAFDAC has directed zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and remove the affected batch from circulation. Distributors, retailers, healthcare providers and caregivers were urged to verify authenticity, purchase only from licensed suppliers and report suspicious products.
Consumers can report adverse events through the Med-Safety App, the agency’s e-reporting platform or via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring regulated products meet required safety standards.
