The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has warned residents against attacking or obstructing its enforcement officers during environmental sanitation and waste management operations across the state.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, issued the warning on Friday after reports that some officers were threatened and assaulted while carrying out routine duties.
Describing the incidents as disturbing and unacceptable, Gbadegesin stressed that LAWMA personnel were deployed to protect public health and ensure compliance with waste management regulations, not to provoke confrontation.
He warned that any form of violence or intimidation against enforcement officers would attract severe legal consequences, noting that the agency’s activities were backed by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, and other relevant regulations.
Gbadegesin urged residents to comply with lawful instructions during enforcement exercises and use appropriate channels to lodge complaints rather than resorting to confrontation.
He also called on community leaders, market associations and transport unions to collaborate with LAWMA in promoting environmental responsibility, while reaffirming the agency’s commitment to firm but fair enforcement and the protection of its personnel.
