Organized labour in Nasarawa State has issued a three-week ultimatum to Governor Abdullahi Sule to commence the payment of the newly approved N70,000 minimum wage. Additionally, labour urged the governor to clear outstanding workers’ entitlements, which amount to N250 million.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Nasarawa State, Ismaila Okoh, made the demands public during a press briefing in Lafia on Thursday. His statement followed an emergency meeting between labour leaders and workers in the state.
Okoh warned that if the government fails to meet these demands within the stipulated timeframe, workers in Nasarawa State would proceed with a strike.
“We are giving the Nasarawa State government until the end of August to start paying the new national minimum wage and other entitlements of workers in the state in order to avert an indefinite strike.
“Civil servants in the state have made enormous sacrifices for the development of the state, so it is important for the state government to act fast in improving the welfare of workers,” the NLC chairman said.
Also, the state Head of Civil Service, Abigail Waya, stated that the government has not yet finalized plans for implementing the new minimum wage.
However, she assured workers that the state government remains committed to enhancing their welfare.
