The Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) has dismissed a surgeon accused of removing a patient’s kidney without consent, a decision that underscores the gravity of the alleged breach of medical ethics.
Ekiti State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, confirmed the dismissal on Friday, stating that the hospital acted promptly after the allegation surfaced.
The case emerged when Joshua Afolayan, a kidney transplant recipient, reported that one of his kidneys was removed during a medical procedure without his knowledge or approval. Following the disclosure, hospital authorities terminated the surgeon’s appointment and commenced investigations into the incident.

The development has sparked renewed concern over patient safety, informed consent, and accountability within public health institutions, with stakeholders calling for tighter oversight and stricter adherence to established medical protocols.
