NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Spread of Unregistered Edible Oils Across Nigeria

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued a public alert over the rising circulation of substandard and unregistered edible oils across the country.

In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the agency warned that several products — including FINO, PUR, OKI, SUPER DELICIEX and LA JONIC — are being smuggled into Nigeria and sold openly despite having no verified sourcing, production standards or safety clearance.

The alarm followed a market surveillance report by Lebruni Agro Limited, which flagged the influx of the unregulated oils while monitoring the edible oil market. The company noted that the products are being warehoused and distributed illegally under multiple brand names.

According to NAFDAC, the adulterated oils have flooded major markets in cities such as Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Calabar, as well as markets in Lagos, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Makurdi and Lafia.

The products, NAFDAC noted, bear no manufacturer information or registration numbers and do not appear in its regulatory database. The agency urged the public to avoid the oils and report any suspected unregistered products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
