The Ekiti state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has raised alarm over the outbreak of cholera in the country, calling on the state government to step up surveillance and take necessary precautions to avoid the disease in Ekiti.
This was part of the resolutions made at the end of June congress of the union and contained in a statement jointly signed by a three-man communique drafting committee.
The communique reads, “After deliberating on various issues of concern and the welfare of members of the Union, the well attended congress which was presided over by the Chairman of the State Council of the Union, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi resolved as follows:
“That the NUJ commends Ekiti State Government for the palliative distributed to various organizations, unions and associations in the State as this would go a long way to cushion the effect of the harsh economy on citizens.
“That the Union congratulates Dr Olufolakemi Olomojobi on her appointment as the Head of Service of Ekiti State and wish the outgoing Head of Service, Engr. Sunday Komolafe well in his future endeavours.
“The Congress urged the State Governor to graciously consider senior Information Officers in the State Ministry of Information for appointment as Permanent Secretary as no Information Officer has ever been appointed into such position since the creation of Ekiti State 28 years ago.
“That the State Government should pay the Weigh-in allowance to journalists in the State Ministry of Information since their colleagues in other States are enjoying the media-related allowance.
“That the Union appreciates the visit of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Akinwale Adeniran and commends him and his team for their efforts in the arrest of the suspected killers of innocent people recently in Ado Ekiti. The congress urges the Police to be more proactive in the reduction of crime in the State.
“That Government should step up surveillance and take necessary precautions to avoid cholera outbreak in Ekiti State and advised members of the public to maintain a hygienic environment.
“That the public should desist from dumping refuse on waterways and drainages to avoid flooding as NIMET had predicted heavy downpour in some States including Ekiti”.
