The Ekiti State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have carried out a nationwide protest at the premises of the distribution companies (DisCos) on Monday over the hike in electricity tariff.
The union decried the deplorable state of electricity supply in the country and the ridiculous hike in the electricity tarrifs saying the act is bringing more hardship to the citizens.
Speaking with journalist today in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, Secretary, NLC Ekiti State, Dr isreal taiwo alleged that the distribution companies (DisCos) oppress the masses through their constant hike in electricity tarrifs.
“Wages are not increasing, but electricity tarrifs are increasing, the irony of the matter is that if Disco has been distributing this power as necessary we will not care about the payment of the fees however what we observe in this country and Ekiti state in particular is that disco is not servicing us, we are living in perpetual darkness, we are the one providing power for ourselves”.
When you raise eyebrow on what you’re been charged on monthly basis, what the Disco will do is to disconnect you permanently.
We are here today to say no to any hike in electricity tarrifs”. He added.
Comrade Sola Adigun, TUC Chairman Ekiti state chapter urged citizens to resist the governments plan to increase electricity tarrifs.
“Why we came out this morning is to stop this move (hike of electricity tarrifs) by the Federal government of Nigeria and its agencies”.
“The NLC and TUC as the voice of the voiceless will resist the unfavorable steps taken by the Federal government.
“Electricity is what drives the economy, the Federal government should do the needful”. He added.
However the unions appealed to Nigerians to remain calm while they continue to protect the interest of the people, urging the Federal government to address the issue immediately.
