Gas Bubbling: NUPRC Launches Probe in Rivers Community

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has launched an urgent investigation into a gas bubbling incident in Bille community, Rivers State, amid renewed concerns over environmental safety in the Niger Delta.

In a statement on Thursday, the commission’s Chief Executive, Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, said a coordinated technical response was activated immediately after the incident was reported.

The regulator assured residents that efforts were underway to determine the source of the gas seepage and mitigate potential risks to lives, health, and the environment.

According to the commission, the investigation involves multiple stakeholders and technical experts, focusing on identifying the cause, assessing the extent of the seepage, and recommending both immediate and long-term solutions.

Preliminary findings suggest the incident may be linked to underground geological activity, although detailed geotechnical and environmental analyses are ongoing.

The commission said all actions would align with global industry standards, while urging residents of Bille to remain calm and comply with safety directives.

The incident adds to longstanding environmental challenges in the Niger Delta, where oil spills, gas leaks, and related hazards have persisted over decades of exploration.

Experts warn that gas seepage, though less frequent than oil spills, can pose serious risks including fire outbreaks, groundwater contamination, and health complications if not swiftly contained.

The probe comes as Nigeria strengthens environmental oversight in the upstream sector under the Petroleum Industry Act, with stakeholders closely watching the outcome for both immediate response and long-term safeguards.
