Several feared dead as explosions rock Maiduguri Monday Market

Several persons are feared dead and many others injured following twin bomb explosions around Monday Market and near a security post at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri.

The explosions reportedly occurred simultaneously at about 7:02 p.m. on Monday, sending panic through the busy commercial area.

Confirming the incident, the Head of Operations of the Federal Fire Service in Borno State, Mohammed Kafaran, said emergency responders had been deployed to the scene.

“Yes, there was a bomb explosion at the Monday Market area around Elkanemi. We have deployed our team to assess the situation and will provide further updates shortly,” he said.

Eyewitnesses said several injured victims had been evacuated to hospitals for treatment, while some lifeless bodies were seen at the scene.

One resident said many of the wounded were taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.

Another witness who spoke on condition of anonymity said the blast occurred moments after he left the nearby post office.

“I had just left the post office when I suddenly heard a loud sound,” the resident said.

Emergency responders are continuing rescue operations as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and casualties.
