Henry Nwosu, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, has died at the age of 62.
His death was announced on Saturday by former teammate Segun Odegbami, who disclosed that Nwosu passed away at about 4:00 a.m. at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after battling an illness for several days.
Odegbami said the ex-midfielder had been receiving intensive care since Wednesday before he died early Saturday morning.

Nwosu, a native of Imo State, was the youngest member of Nigeria’s 1980 squad that secured the country’s first continental title on home soil.
Renowned for his vision, creativity and technical skill in midfield, he later remained involved in the game after retirement, working as a coach and mentor to young footballers.
