Sokoto PDP governorship candidate Saidu Umar resigns

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Sokoto State, Saidu Umar, popularly known as Ubandoma Sokoto, has resigned from the party, citing unresolved leadership disputes at the national level.

In a resignation letter dated March 10, 2026, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Sarkin Adar Kofar Atiku Ward in Sokoto South Local Government Area, Umar said his decision takes immediate effect.

His exit comes days after former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, also left the party, further fuelling political realignments in the state.

Umar attributed his resignation to persistent internal conflicts and unresolved legal battles over the party’s national leadership.

“The lingering legal challenges and the existence of parallel leadership within the party at the national level have remained unresolved and continue to hinder unity, stability and effective political engagement,” he said.

Despite leaving the PDP, Umar expressed gratitude to the party for giving him the platform to contest the 2023 governorship election and thanked party leaders and supporters for their backing.

He added that he remains committed to democratic values and the development of Sokoto State and Nigeria.

Copies of the resignation letter were also sent to the PDP chairman in Sokoto South LGA and the party’s state chairman.
