Onitsha North Begins Demolition of Illegal Structures at Main Market

Onitsha North Local Government Council has commenced the demolition of illegal structures at Onitsha Main Market as part of efforts to restore the market’s original masterplan and ease trading activities.

The enforcement, which began on Sunday, follows the expiration of multiple notices issued to affected traders occupying unapproved structures at Park 1, Park 2 and Park 3.

In a statement signed by the Mayor/Chairman, Anthony Nwora, the council said an initial 14-day demolition notice expired on February 14, 2026, before being extended by another 14 days at the occupants’ request, ending February 28.

The council warned that demolition would proceed from March 1 and advised traders to remove valuables from affected structures.

Authorities said the exercise is aimed at reclaiming the market layout, reducing congestion and restoring order in one of the Southeast’s busiest commercial hubs.
