Werder Bremen have confirmed that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will not play again this season despite resuming light training after a long injury layoff.
The 25-year-old, who joined Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, suffered a knee injury during training in December and underwent surgery in January in Innsbruck under specialist Prof. Dr Christian Fink.
Sporting director Peter Niemeyer said Boniface is completing rehabilitation in Leverkusen but will not return before the campaign ends.
“He is finishing his rehabilitation in Leverkusen, and we are pleased with every bit of progress. But it is still impossible to predict when he will be fully fit again,” Niemeyer told DeichStube.

Boniface recently posted a video of himself doing leg exercises on X, reassuring fans with the caption, “Help me post this one too, I dey training.”
He made 11 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen this season, providing two assists without scoring.
The injury compounds a difficult spell for the forward, who also missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and Bremen’s January 2026 opener against Borussia Dortmund due to fitness issues. During his recovery, Boniface admitted the mental strain of his setbacks, saying he had been “putting on a fake smile for over a year.”
