The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has been summoned to appear personally or through legal representation in a suit filed against him by some princes of Oyo town at the Oyo State High Court sitting in Oyo.
In the suit, HOY/18/2026, the claimants — Ladigbolu Adegboyega, Owoade Tesleem, Adeyemi Adesina and Adeyemi Adebayo — are seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the Alaafin from attending or participating in events they describe as unbecoming of his status as a symbolic traditional head of the Yoruba race.

They are also asking the court to restrain the monarch from acting in any traditional or official capacity that would render him subservient or inferior to any other Oba in Yorubaland.
The princes further urged the court to declare that the Alaafin of Oyo stool is of immense historical importance to Yorubaland, Nigeria and beyond, describing the Alaafin as a symbol of unity and custodian of Yoruba cultural and traditional heritage.
In addition, the claimants want the court to affirm that the Alaafin is the paramount ruler and appointing authority over all chieftaincies in Oyo Town, Oyo North and Oyo South.
The court documents state that the defendant may enter an appearance either personally or through legal practitioners by filing the necessary forms at the court registry or submitting them by registered post.
