Senate President Godswill Akpabio has ordered hospitals nationwide to immediately ensure the availability of anti-venom following the reported death of a young Nigerian singer, Ifunanya, from a snakebite in Abuja.
Akpabio issued the directive during a plenary session while raising concerns over the persistent shortage of life-saving anti-venom in health facilities across the country.
He urged the Federal Ministry of Health, working with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to prioritise the procurement, quality control, proper storage and nationwide distribution of safe, effective and affordable anti-venom.
The singer’s death has triggered public outrage and renewed calls for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s emergency healthcare system, particularly in ensuring the availability of critical antidotes in hospitals.
