Manchester City were stunned 3-1 by Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday night as the Norwegian underdogs pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history.
A first-half brace from Kasper Høgh and a superb second-half strike by Jens Petter Hauge left Pep Guardiola’s side reeling in freezing conditions at the Aspmyra Stadion, deep inside the Arctic Circle. Rayan Cherki briefly gave City hope with a swift response, but Rodri’s red card sealed a humiliating night for the former European champions.
Playing their first-ever Champions League group campaign, Bodo/Glimt exposed City’s defensive frailties with relentless pressing and ruthless finishing, despite the vast financial and pedigree gap between both sides.
The result compounds City’s growing woes, coming days after their derby defeat to Manchester United and extending a poor run of form domestically. Guardiola, who had spoken of his side rediscovering their hunger, was instead left to reflect on one of the most embarrassing defeats of his managerial career.
City must now regroup ahead of their final group clash against Galatasaray as they chase a top-eight finish and automatic qualification for the last 16.
