Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has accepted an invitation from US President Donald Trump to join his proposed “Board of Peace” as a founding member, the Moroccan foreign ministry announced on Monday.
In a statement carried by state news agency MAP, the ministry said the monarch welcomed Trump’s vision for promoting global peace and had agreed to ratify the charter establishing the board.
The US-led initiative is designed to support peace efforts in the Middle East and introduce new approaches to resolving international conflicts. Although initially conceived to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction, the charter does not restrict the board’s mandate to the Palestinian territory.
Under the terms of the charter seen by AFP, member countries would be represented by their heads of state or government and could serve for at least three years, with extended membership available to those contributing more than $1 billion within the first year.
The White House has extended invitations to several world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, with Trump set to chair the board.
Initial reactions from key US allies France and Canada have been cautious, while others invited have yet to publicly confirm their participation.
