Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has said it would be a “no-brainer” to return to the club as part of the coaching staff if Michael Carrick is appointed caretaker manager.
According to BBC Sport, Carrick has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge until the end of the season following the sacking of Ruben Amorim on January 5. Darren Fletcher is currently overseeing first-team affairs.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast, Rooney described Carrick as a “great fit” and said the club needs figures who understand United’s culture to help restore its identity.
“The club has lost its identity and that family feel. This is a chance to bring the spirit of Manchester United back,” Rooney said.
Asked if he would join Carrick’s coaching team, Rooney replied: “Of course I would. It’s a no-brainer… If I were asked, I’d go in.”
Carrick previously served as United’s interim manager for three matches in 2021, and the club is expected to confirm a caretaker appointment before players return to training on Wednesday.
