No fewer than 12 people were killed and three others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Yangoji–Abaji corridor of the Federal Capital Territory on Sunday, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
The accident occurred around 11:45 a.m. at Gada Biyu and involved four vehicles — a Volvo trailer, a Ford Sharon bus and two Volkswagen Golf cars. The FRSC said its patrol team arrived at the scene minutes after the first distress call.
Preliminary findings linked the crash to speed violation and loss of control, resulting in a chain collision. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the trailer, which was conveying coal, veered off the road and rammed into an illegal roadside motor park.
A total of 18 persons were involved in the incident, including men, women and children. Of the number, 12 died, three sustained injuries while three others escaped unhurt.
The injured were taken to Abaji General Hospital, while the deceased were released to their families. The Motor Traffic Division of the Nigerian Police in Kwali has taken over investigations.
FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Felix Theman, expressed condolences to the victims’ families and warned motorists against illegal roadside loading and off-loading, describing the practice as dangerous and avoidable.
