Architect Sues Lagos Hospital for ₦500m Over Alleged Medical Negligence

A Lagos resident and consultant architect, Alfred Ogene, has filed a ₦500 million medical negligence claim against R-Jolad Hospital Nigeria Limited, alleging that poor catheter management caused permanent damage to his urinary system.

In a memorandum issued by his solicitors, Nojim Tairu & Co., Ogene said he was admitted to the hospital on November 15, 2025, following partial paralysis from a stroke. He alleged that complications arose after a urinary catheter was inserted, with repeated complaints of pain allegedly ignored by nursing staff.

According to the claim, the situation worsened until his abdomen became severely bloated, forcing doctors to eventually pierce his lower abdomen to drain urine directly from his bladder. The solicitors described the handling of the catheter as unprofessional, negligent, and traumatic.

Ogene is demanding ₦500m for negligent treatment, ₦100m for trauma, ₦200m for loss of enjoyment of life, and ₦10m monthly as loss of earnings from December 2025 to 2042. He is also seeking refunds of hospital bills, legal costs, and damages against the hospital’s management.

The hospital, in a response to Saturday PUNCH, said the matter had been escalated for investigation, stressing its commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and professional standards.
