
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced the death of a Part Three medical student, Timilehin Toromade, of the institution.
In a statement signed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, OAU said the 18-year-old student of the Department of Medicine and Surgery was believed to have died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
According to the statement, Toromade, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, was last seen alive after 2 a.m., when one of his roommates reportedly opened the door for another medical student residing in the same building.
Describing the incident as devastating, the university said it received the news “with profound shock, deep sorrow and a heavy heart.”
In a condolence message, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, mourned the late student, describing his death as deeply painful and distressing.
“The entire University community is united in grief over the untimely departure of a student who embraced the rigours of medical training with the hope of serving humanity,” Bamire said, adding that the loss had left a deep void among his peers and lecturers.
The university said it was working closely with relevant authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident in line with established medical procedures.
OAU also disclosed that support measures had been put in place to assist students and staff affected by the tragedy, urging members of the university community to remain calm, compassionate and prayerful.
