Trump Highlights Welfare Use Data Among Immigrants, Nigeria Placed Mid-Range

U.S. President Donald Trump has shared a chart showing welfare participation rates among immigrant households in the United States, stating that about 33.3 per cent of Nigerian immigrant households receive some form of public assistance. The chart was posted on his Truth Social platform on Sunday as part of renewed Republican discussions around immigration, welfare dependency, and the economic impact of immigrants.

The data, titled “Immigrant Welfare Recipient Rates by Country of Origin,” covers immigrants from about 120 countries and lists households receiving support such as food aid, healthcare benefits, and other welfare programs. According to the chart, the highest welfare participation rates were recorded among immigrants from Bhutan, Yemen, Somalia, the Marshall Islands, the Dominican Republic, and Afghanistan. Nigeria, at 33.3 per cent, was placed around the middle, while countries such as Bermuda, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Korea, and Kenya recorded some of the lowest rates.

Trump’s post comes amid tighter immigration policies, including expanded travel bans and visa restrictions introduced in 2025 and extended into 2026. The welfare data has since sparked debate, with critics arguing that such figures do not clearly separate refugees from other immigrants or account for short-term versus long-term use of public assistance.
