CAF Launches African Nations League, Unveils New Annual Competition for National Teams

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled the African Nations League, a new annual competition aimed at providing a consistent, high-quality platform for the continent’s senior national teams and top players.

CAF said the initiative is designed to guarantee regular elite-level competition across Africa while offering players greater exposure on the continental stage. The governing body described the league as a major step toward strengthening African football and enhancing its global profile.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, CAF announced:

“CAF launches exciting new African Nations League and guarantees that CAF will host, every year, a world-class Senior National Team Competition in which the best African players will participate.”

According to CAF, the African Nations League will promote competitive football, support player development, and deepen fan engagement across the continent. By holding the tournament annually, CAF said national teams will benefit from sustained high-level matches outside traditional major tournaments.

The launch underscores CAF’s broader strategy to elevate African football, create sustainable opportunities for players and national associations, and ensure regular exposure for the continent’s best talents.

The new competition comes amid broader reforms to CAF’s international calendar. PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will transition to a four-year cycle after the 2028 edition, marking a significant shift from the current biennial format, as announced by CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
