Abia Deputy Governor Urges Igbo Lawyers to Uphold Justice, Integrity

The Abia State Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, has urged Igbo lawyers to uphold justice, integrity and professionalism in order to protect the collective dignity of Ndi Igbo in all spheres of society.

Emetu made the call while representing Governor Alex Otti at the 2025 Annual Dinner and Award Night of Otu Oka Iwu, an association of legal practitioners of Igbo extraction, held in Lagos.

The event attracted senior members of the legal profession, government officials and leaders of major Igbo socio-cultural organisations.

“As a body of lawyers from Eastern Nigeria, you must ensure that the pride of Ndi Igbo is protected in every sphere,” Emetu said, stressing that the legal profession occupies a critical role in promoting justice and good governance.

The gathering also provided a platform for Otu Oka Iwu to reaffirm its commitment to unity, communal advancement and justice in Nigeria. Speakers emphasised the need to preserve Igbo heritage, strengthen communal bonds and promote excellence within the legal profession.

In his welcome address, the President of Otu Oka Iwu, Mr Okechukwu Unegbu, described the event as a celebration of excellence and a reaffirmation of shared values. He commended award recipients for their professional achievements and pledged continued support for young lawyers committed to justice.

Chair of the Planning Committee, Mrs Augustina Igbokwe, said the association must be repositioned as a rallying point for Ndi Igbo in Lagos, noting that the awardees exemplified individuals already defending Igbo interests and mentoring younger professionals.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr Afam Osigwe (SAN), cautioned against public commentary on matters pending before the courts, urging respect for due process, particularly in cases involving prominent Igbo figures.

Also speaking, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dr Azuta Mbata, said Igbo communities at home and in the diaspora were increasingly reclaiming their identity with pride, despite historical challenges.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to several distinguished legal practitioners, including multiple Senior Advocates of Nigeria, in recognition of their contributions to the legal profession and Igbo advancement.

The event ended with renewed calls for unity, ethical leadership and sustained mentorship, as Otu Oka Iwu reaffirmed its role in promoting justice and communal development.
