FG gets fresh N6.45bn support to train young Nigerians in tech

The Federal Government has received over N6.45bn in new private-sector funding to scale up the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme nationwide.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, announced the support from IHS (N2.5bn), MTN (N2.95bn) and Airtel (N1bn) at the 3MTT National Impact Summit in Abuja, saying the investment will expand training infrastructure and widen access for young Nigerians pursuing tech careers.

Tijani said the initiative’s growth has been driven by strong demand and President Bola Tinubu’s reforms in the digital economy, which have helped restore investor confidence. He cited milestones such as the National Data Protection Act, approval of a $2bn, 90,000km fibre project, and designation of telecom assets as critical infrastructure.

He noted that more than 1.8 million Nigerians applied within the first month, with training delivered in phases — from 30,000 learners in 2023 to one million in 2024, ahead of a three-million target next year. Over 15,000 participants from the first phase are already employed, many earning above N250,000.

President Tinubu, represented by SGF George Akume, said Nigeria’s $1tn economic ambition depends on sustained investment in digital skills and youth productivity.

Launched in 2023, 3MTT aims to train Nigerians in software development, AI, cybersecurity and data science across all 36 states and the FCT.
