Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to shut down illegal and substandard private universities, insisting that Nigeria must not tolerate poor-quality education.
Hosting the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) Accreditation Team in Ado-Ekiti, Babalola lamented the rise of unapproved institutions and warned that only strict enforcement can protect Nigeria’s academic standards. He noted that ABUAD, valued at over N300bn, reinvests all surplus funds into its facilities, including its industrial park and multi-system teaching hospital.
He also appealed to public-spirited Nigerians to support credible private universities, noting that ABUAD has never received major endowments since inception.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor Prof. Smaranda Olarinde said the MDCN visit was crucial to the ongoing accreditation of ABUAD’s MBBS programme, which earned full accreditation within three years — an unusual feat in Nigeria. She reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to transparency and high standards.
