Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, announced on Wednesday the suspension of Justice Minister Herman Galushchenko amid an ongoing corruption probe in the country’s energy sector.
The move follows accusations by anti-corruption prosecutors linking Galushchenko—who previously served as energy minister—to a $100 million embezzlement scheme involving Timur Mindich, a close ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“In line with due process, a decision was made to suspend Herman Galushchenko from performing his duties as minister of justice,” Svyrydenko said in a statement. She added that Deputy Minister for European Integration, Lyudmyla Sugak, will assume his responsibilities.
In response, Galushchenko said he supported the decision, describing it as a “civilised and correct step” pending the investigation. “A political decision must be made first, and then the details can be sorted out. I will defend myself in court and prove my position,” he stated.
According to the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO), Mindich allegedly channelled illicit funds through energy contracts, providing Galushchenko with “personal benefits” in exchange for influence over sectoral finances.
The scandal has provoked public outrage and comes as Ukraine continues to battle the devastating impact of ongoing Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
