Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government following reports that the Super Eagles boycotted training ahead of Thursday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Obi expressed disappointment that players representing Nigeria were being owed allowances despite their dedication to the country.
“It is truly unfortunate that our Super Eagles, who consistently give their best in representing our nation, are being owed their allowances,” he said. “We always seem to find money for lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who bring us pride. This is shameful.”
Obi described the development as a “national disgrace,” warning that it sends the wrong message to young Nigerians that hard work and service are not rewarded. He urged the authorities to resolve the matter immediately and ensure that athletes are treated with dignity and respect.
Nigeria’s preparations suffered a setback on Tuesday when the entire team and backroom staff refused to train in Rabat, Morocco, over unpaid allowances and bonuses. The standoff, reports say, stems from unresolved financial issues with football authorities.
