ASUU Suspends Warning Strike, Gives FG One-Month Deadline

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, giving the Federal Government a one-month deadline to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address unresolved issues in the university system. ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced this on Wednesday in Abuja, noting that the suspension followed productive talks with government representatives and interventions by the National Assembly.

Piwuna said the warning strike, declared on October 13, 2025, became necessary after government failed to act on several appeals concerning lecturers’ welfare and the long-standing agreement. He explained that the government later re-engaged the union through meetings led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed on October 16 and 18, which resulted in noticeable progress.

The ASUU president commended the efforts of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, and Labour, alongside the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for helping to revive dialogue. He said ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) reviewed the situation and concluded that the strike had achieved part of its goal, prompting its suspension.

Piwuna stated that the decision was made in consideration of students, parents, and other stakeholders who showed solidarity during the strike. However, he warned that ASUU would resume industrial action if the government fails to honour its commitments within one month.
