Emir of Zuru, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami (Rtd.), Dies at 81

The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami (Rtd.), also known as Gomo II, has passed away.

According to his family, the Emir died in London on Sunday, August 17, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 81.

Born on October 24, 1943, Sani Sami enlisted in the Nigerian Army on December 10, 1962, and trained at the Mons Officer Cadet School, Aldershot, United Kingdom. He was commissioned as an officer on July 25, 1963.

During his distinguished military career, he held several strategic positions, including Commander of the Brigade of Guards under General Murtala Mohammed’s administration and Military Governor of Bauchi State in December 1983.

Following his retirement from active service, Sani Sami returned to Zuru, where he ascended the throne as Emir. He was widely respected as a hardworking, disciplined, and humble leader who remained committed to the traditions and cultural heritage of his people.

The Zuru Emirate Council said funeral arrangements would be announced in due time.
